What is Permaculture?
Permanant Agriculture
To be honest, when I first heard the word permaculture and for many years after, I had no idea what the word meant. Neither of the subfixes in the word help a commoner know what it is. Perma... means permanent or long lasting. Culture? means what is cultivated, either from agriculture or human way of life. So permaculture means a sustainable (permanent) way to do agriculture. Now that makes a lot more sense! But we are not there yet. The word "sustainable", is politicized enough and therefore its initial interpretation could be subject to an inprecise interpretation of a political creed. Sustainable agnostically means it has attributes that support, bear or endure something. In my mind, this simply means that permaculture doesn't require high human input to sustain. In some cases providing water should be the only input, plus the introduction of medium, plant or wildlife systems as permanent or self-sustaining inputs.
